NFTs and Gaming: A Match Made in Heaven
Ever since the 70’s video game Pong, people have been investing time, money and emotion into the world of gaming. E-sports have garnered significant attention in the past decade with some popular MMORPG tournaments recording more viewers than the Super Bowl. Yet the millions of hours spent online by gamers earn them nothing, all while large studios rake in billions.
However, NFTs are beginning to shift this narrative in favor of the masses.
In-Game Ownership
Video game players will do anything for an advantage in their favorite games, even if it costs them real currency.
For example, Fortnite developer Epic Games cleared $50 million on a single cosmetic character upgrade. SuperCell, the studio behind top mobile games like Clash of Clans, has recorded north of $1 billion in revenue thanks to in-game upgrade purchases. Suffice to say, in-game purchases are the primary source of revenue for video game studios these days. However, this revenue model lacks a critical piece of value for the player: ownership.
Thanks to blockchain technology, players can now prove ownership of an asset in their favorite game and realize its value in ways previously impossible. One of the games that is actively bringing this to market is Heroes of Mavia.
Heroes of Mavia
Heroes of Mavia is a base-builder blockchain game being developed by Skrice Studios. Taking much inspiration from the wildly successful mobile game Clash of Clans, players collect resources, develop their bases, and battle enemies for cryptocurrency rewards.
This game is being built on the Ethereum blockchain and will exist both on and off chain.
NFTs within Mavia
Thanks to NFTs, Heroes of Mavia will offer unique ways for users to earn crypto while playing the game. The primary NFT within Mavia is Land, where players can build and upgrade their bases. Each of these Lands are unique and tradable NFTs with varying degrees of rarity, immediately giving their holders value beyond gameplay.
Beyond their intrinsic value, Land holders can rent their bases or “partner” with new players to share ownership and split earnings. An investor could acquire several Lands and rent them to eager players, much like an apartment’s landlord.
Other NFTs offered within the game are Heroes and Statues, which provide holders slight advantages in gameplay. Once a player has realized the desired value of these NFTs, they can sell them on the open market at the highest bidder’s price.
Cryptocurrency within Mavia
Heroes of Mavia will employ a Dual Token Economy model to power its play-to-earn loop. These two tokens are $MAVIA, the game’s governance token, and $RUBY, the in-game reward token. Both of these tokens will be ERC-20’s, meaning they can be listed on exchanges and purchased with ETH or other cryptocurrencies.
$MAVIA
The $MAVIA token is used for staking, rentals and reward purposes as well as the currency for Mavia’s NFT exchange.
$RUBY
The $RUBY token is used as the in-game token that players earn both actively and passively, and can be spent on NFT upgrades. It can be can be easily withdrawn from the game and converted into other cryptocurrencies. Any $RUBY spent in-game is automatically burned as a deflationary mechanism (along with other deflationary economics used to manage supply).
A flowchart illustrating the token economy is provided below:
Setting the Standard
All-Star Investors Backing Mavia
Anyone familiar with crypto is bound to recognize the names on their investor roster: Binance Labs, Animoca Brands, and Crypto.com, just to name a few. Notable raises include a $5.5 million seed round with Binance Labs and a recent $2.5 million strategic investment from Crypto.com. With institutional capital backing Skrice Studios, this project is highly vetted and insulated from any bear market. There are few other projects that have received this level of attention and financing, which speaks volumes to the potential of the project and capability of the Skrice Studios team.
The Skrice Team
Skrice Studios is a game-development company based out of Vietnam with over 60 team members working internationally to build the future of blockchain gaming. Currently, their sole focus is making Heroes of Mavia into a phenomenal play-to-earn experience. All of the gameplay, art, economies and tokenomics are produced in-house. Skrice is setting a very lofty standard with unprecedented features like public API access and mobile-friendly gameplay.
A Standard-Setting Launch
Heroes of Mavia is already making noise after its initial Land mint on March 4th, 2022. Reserved exclusively for their passionate community members and heavily followed influencers, 10,0000 Land NFTs were minted at 0.3 ETH for Common Land, 0.6 ETH for Rare Land and 0.9 ETH for Legendary Land (note that the rarities only account for cosmetic improvements and will not inherently affect one’s ability to earn). Not including perpetual revenues from royalty fees on secondary market transactions, Heroes of Mavia cleared 3,060 ETH from this initial sale.
These NFTs had a blowout sale with 100% conversion, leaving secondary markets on OpenSea as the only way to acquire one. Common Lands are currently selling for 0.92 ETH at the time of writing, over 3x the mint cost.
Partnerships with E-Sports Giants
As social media influence and live streaming continue to explode in pop culture, gaming organizations are evolving from basement pet-projects to bona fide corporations. Thankfully, the team at Mavia is well aware of this and is already making moves to capitalize on this emerging market.
In February, Mavia announced a partnership with European esports giant Team Queso, solidifying an international presence and securing a viewership base of over 250,000 fans. Mavia also recently finalized a partnership with American mobile-gaming powerhouse Tribe Gaming, an e-sports team sponsored by Ford Motors. Through these partnerships, Heroes of Mavia has guaranteed attention and popularity upon launch.
A Multi-Faceted Metaverse
By now we are all familiar with the “metaverse”. Facebook rebrands to Meta, Snoop Dogg is living in The Sandbox, and JPMorgan Chase & Co. owns property in Decentraland. There are so many different platforms for the metaverse to exist within, and I believe it is prudent to recognize that the metaverse is not a singular entity - it is a boundless and expansive frontier on which anyone can exist online, and Heroes of Mavia is taking on the metaverse via gaming. From impressive capital raises to top-tier partnerships, Heroes of Mavia is paving the way for blockchain gaming in an unprecedented fashion. I am personally very optimistic that this project will create enormous value for its community.
How to Invest in Heroes of Mavia
To gain exposure to this project right now, you can purchase land via OpenSea here. Sometime in the near future the $MAVIA token will ICO, presenting a more cost-friendly investment vehicle if Land is out of your price range. MAJR DAO currently holds two common Heroes of Mavia Land plots and plans to hold these for the long term.
